Depression, Risk, School Lunches and More: Research Round Up

Big, little, high, Low. Learning spatial terms helps develop actual spatial skills.
Interesting, compelling, fascinating, curious, informative, educational, entertaining, amusing….

Penchant for risky behavior peaks at age 50. 
Only 44 more years until I can stop worrying my kids are going to do something stupid.  Oh yeah, these people had to choose whether to do a math challenge not exactly bugee jumping off a cliff.

Woodsmoke from cooking fires linked to pneumonia and cognitive impairements. 
One word: microwave. 

Seriously, check out Julia Roberts, Global Ambassador for Clean Cook Stoves and her efforts to get more clean stoves in families living in developing countries.  Cooking shouldn’t kill anyone. 

Healthy school lunches make low-income kids kids healthier, leaner and more food secure. 
Duh and duh.

Food Secure:
When all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.  

Food Security Insecurity: When people with too much food waste too much time decribing people with too little food. 

Helping others helps rural teenagers avoid alcohol and drugs. 
Drop DARE.  Pick up shovels, rakes, and brooms immediately. 

Depression in late teens and young adulthood raises risk of dying from heart disease later on.
Especially for women. 

Child sexual abuse tied to worse cardiac health later in life. 
Even when controlling for usual suspects like being overweight, smoking, drinking, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.  Do you hear that people drawing up those lawsuits? Add in the bad heart.

  1. I always though DARE was kind of a joke. It makes a ton of sense that volunteering would be more effective. What kept me from even thinking about trying drugs was that my father was a high school teacher and very aware of drugs and would have easily figured out if I was trying something illicit.

  2. Hey Awesome! My dad was a high school teacher too! Mom teacher, aunts, grandparents, uncles….too bad I didn't have the patience gene. Anyhow, if people only knew how ineffective DARE is at targeting the really at risk kids…..but it makes everyone feel like they're doing something.
