Private versus Public: Does it Matter to Academic Achievement?

Do kids who go to private school do any better than those that don’t? A new study shows private schooled kids, compared to their same SES public school counterparts do better on developed academic skills like critical thinking as measured on the SAT. There’s less of a difference on the achievement tests.

Haven’t looked at the actual study yet but John Cloud reviews the issue at Time Magazine. He also shows how political the issue is – even among educational researchers. Worth a read. In the interest of full disclosure, my oldest child attends a private school – a decision that my husband and I long debated but one that we are quite satisfied with based on my daughter’s complete and utter rapture with school.
